Removing administrative rights from Windows users can have
transformative security benefits. But legacy apps, IT workload, and
cultural issues often get in the way. This whitepaper compares other
techniques to deliver the same results.

CASE STUDY

Hospital reaps healthy returns from wireless
By Joanne Cummings, Network World

In 2003, Seattle's Swedish Medical Center, a three-hospital campus with
more than 7,000 employees and annual revenues of $1 billion, decided to
tackle its paper problems by implementing a wireless network among its
metropolitan campus as part of a new electronic medical records (EMR)
system. The idea was to provide real-time, easy-to-use, accurate
information to clinicians right at the point of care.

The center's new wireless network, which cost $3.8 million and was
completed in October 2007, consists of more than 1,300 Cisco access
points distributed among eight locations and linked via a metro Ethernet
network. Overall, it supports about 600 wireless workstations on wheels
(WoW), 400 wireless laptops and 200 tablet PCs. And the benefits have
rolled in accordingly.

Achieving PCI Compliance at the Point of Sale
http://itw.itworld.com/GoNow/a14724a176206a439438189a19
With such a high risk for exposure, the point-of-sale has become an
obvious pain point for IT departments across a variety of industries.
Although these machines have a single, well-defined purpose, patching
and antivirus updates still require significant effort to keep them
secure. This whitepaper examines the PCI data security standard and
describes a low-maintenance approach to locking down kiosks, in-store
PCs, and corporate Windows systems.

Anti-Virus Is Dead: The Advent of the Graylist Approach to Computer
Protection
http://itw.itworld.com/GoNow/a14724a176206a439438189a18
This whitepaper, written by Hurwitz & Associates Partner Robin Bloor,
discusses how viruses, trojans, and other forms of malware persist only
because anti-virus, the main defense against them, is terribly flawed.
But now a far more effective technique is proliferating. Instead of
trying to recognize malicious software, application whitelists focus on
authenticating valid software. This approach enables whitelists to block
a far wider variety of malicious software than AV products could ever
hope to stop.
